Port Alberni Welcomes you!

OUR CULTURAL HERITAGE

Port Alberni and the Alberni Valley are proud home to a rich cultural heritage. Our aboriginal First Nations people, Chinese pioneers and early European settlers each helped shape today's modern Alberni Valley.

Steeped in a rich cultural legacy, the city lies within the Tseshaht First Nations territory. The Tseshaht are one of the fourteen tribes affiliated with the Nuu-chah-nulth tribal council. Dedicated to developing sustainable cultural tourism,  the Hupacasath First Nation own and operate Choo-Kwa Ventures. They offer visitors and residents the unique opportunity to experience living history while paddling  a replica war canoe.

Experienced interpretive guides enlighten paddlers to  the rich cultural heritage of the historically and culturally significant Somass River or nearby Sproat Lake while sharing native songs and legends.

Recently, the Hupacasath First Nation sponsored the The Choo Kwa Challenge, a demanding canoe race along the scenic Somass River.

Our cultural legacy is also testament to the personal determination  of many native  athletes and the spirited community support they receive in recognition of the importance of athletic achievement.
