In recent years, Port Alberni, BC has successfully hosted dozens of major sporting events. Our state-of-the-art athletic facilities  support the specialized needs of a myriad of sports endeavours. 


Local Athlete Carly Haggard is an alumnus of Canada’s under-22 National Women's Hockey team.

 

As well, five local players have made it to the NHL, notably Rich Chernomaz, Jim Hiller and John Newberry. Veteran NHL referee, Rob Shick, also proudly represents Port Alberni

Port Alberni  boasts of being the only community to host each of the British Columbia Games: the Summer, Winter, Seniors and Disabled Games. The area continues to attract local, regional, national and international events thanks to our centralized and modern sports facilities and welcoming community spirit.

February 2004

More than 2,400 participants contributed to the success of the recent BC Winter Games hosted in Port Alberni, BC.

The Games gave young athletes an opportunity to improve their skills on their way to higher levels of competition and to experience the challenges, excitement, triumphs and defeats of participating in a major multi-sport event. 

The 23 events of the 2004 games utilized the city's centralized sports facilities to their greatest potential. The classic winter sports of alpine and cross-country skiing, speed skating, hockey and figure skating were represented. Indoor events were also a highlight featuring fencing, karate, and gymnastics.

BC Olympic and Paralympic Youth Academy

In February 2004, Grades 9 and 10 students from around the province had the opportunity to participant in the BC Olympic and Paralympic Youth Leadership Academy. 2004 was the first time the Academy was offered in conjunction with the  BC Winter Games.  Forty-two students travelled to  Port Alberni and participated in many games activities while also taking part  in Academy sessions.
