The Port Alberni Fire Department (PAFD) provides emergency services in the City of Port Alberni and beyond. PAFD has full-time dispatch services and round the clock on-duty full-time crews ready to respond to any number of diverse emergencies.

PAFD will respond to fires, medical emergencies, rescues and hazardous materials incidents within the City of Port Alberni. PAFD also provides fire protection to a number of areas outside the city on a contract basis. PAFD will respond to hazardous materials and/or rescue situations anywhere in the Alberni Valley.

PAFD personnel include one fire chief, one deputy fire chief, one chief fire prevention officer, four fire captains and 16 firefighters, one of whom is also a mechanic. Within that staff many individuals also specialize in specific areas of expertise such as breathing apparatus repair, training in specialized fields and a computer specialist.

PAFD equipment includes one 70-foot aerial ladder, two fire engines, one four-wheel drive rescue/pumper, one 2000-gallon tanker, one one-ton walk-in van, one fireboat and two four-wheel drive trucks. Special equipment includes confined space and high angle rescue equipment, Jaws of Life and hazardous material response equipment.

PAFD is an active member in the First Responder Program, which involves fire crews responding to life threatening medical emergencies. In this manner, firefighters are able to assist ambulance crews in ensuring quick, professional care for victims of medical emergencies.

As well, local sports medicine physicians, physiotherapists, massage therapists, chiropractors and sport injury professionals can provide teams or individuals with health care services specific to athletics. These trained individuals round out the team of qualified professionals dedicated to providing quality health care and emergency services to locals and visitors.
