Port Alberni boasts a rich sporting history.
Perhaps best known as "Salmon Capital of the World" -- our sporting legacy now spreads far beyond tales of big fish.
Five Alberni valley athletes have made it to the NHL- notably Rich Chemomaz, Jim Hillier and John Newberry. Veteran NHL referree, Rob Shick, also proudly represents Port Alberni. Latest, but not least, our own Carly Haggard is an alumnus of Canada's Under-22 National Women's Hockey team. As well, many local First Nations athletes have played a great part in Port Alberni's sporting heritage.
The legacy for future sporting events was secured with the opening of the city's new Multiplex facility in 2001. In that inaugural season the multiplex hosted Team Canada and Team Sweden for a pre-Olympic exhibition contest of international Women's Hockey-- the event promoted women's hockey and sold out the 1700+ seat venue.
In 2003, Port Alberni and the CBC hosted the prestigious "Hockey Day in Canada", much to the envy of other communities. Port Alberni is now proudly listed amongst CBC's "Hockey Hometowns."
In December 2008 we are proud to host the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge. Five Canadian regional teams face-off against five international teams at the 2009 World U-17 Challenge, December 29, 2008 to January 4, 2009 in Port Alberni, BC and across Vancouver Island.
And hockey is just the beginning...
