The Ultimate Regional Multi-Purpose Sports Venue- We’re Onto It! The
new Alberni Valley Multiplex is the crown jewel of the numerous facilities
accessible for sports, recreation, and entertainment events in S’Port
Alberni. It is large enough to
facilitate two major commercial, performance, public assembly or sports
events simultaneously yet compact enough for informal functions.
The Multiplex supports numerous hockey leagues. Men, women, and children participate at all levels from rookie advancing to the Junior “A” team--the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. The Bulldogs enjoy an enthusiastic fan base with a large volume of season ticket subscribers resulting in capacity crowds. Meet our local heroes-- five local players
have made it to the NHL, notably, Rich Chernomaz,Jim Hiller and John
Newberry. NHL veteran referee, Rob Shick, proudly represents Port Alberni. Last, but not, least, Carly Haggard is an
alumnus of Canada’s
under-22 National Women's Hockey team. Since
the Multiplex opened in June 2001, hundreds of new players have entered
the hockey program. Most notably S’Port Alberni has developed a
dedicated minor female hockey program. Worthy of note—new hockey
enthusiasts include at least 200 adult men and women who are now playing
hockey who weren’t two years ago. The Multiplex is also a great
favourite for skaters of all levels and abilities. Skate rentals and sharpening services are available on site. A
professionally designed concert-quality sound system and specifically
configured acoustics are engineered in the Weyerhaeuser Arena to provide
extraordinary sound quality. Electrical service is sufficient to power a
variety of events from high-energy rock and pop bands to symphony
orchestras, full-on professional dance companies and performance troupes.
In addition, a fully functional announcer’s box provides instant
play-by-play commentary for hockey and other sports events. Flexible
component staging is accessible onsite to quickly morph event flooring and
seating configurations on demand. From
inception, the Multiplex is in constant demand. All 1500 Weyerhaeuser
Arena seats were filled for the recent Lippizaner Stallions, the Nanaimo
RCMP versus the Port Alberni RCMP “Battle of the Badges” hockey
challenge, and the Canadian Women’s hockey team exhibition among other
events. A further 1500 seats can be installed on the floor of the
Weyerhaeuser Arena for a total capacity of 3000 spectators. The Coulson
Arena can accommodate 200-300 people depending on the seating
configuration. The
Multiplex truly fulfills its multistage mandate since it can host an
infinite combination of events; for example, a tae kwon doe martial arts
tournament in one arena and, perhaps, a dog agility competition in the
other. The Multiplex can, and has, hosted diverse events such as dry
grads, home shows, a three-ring circus and even a carpenter’s
competition.
The
Multiplex has a spacious and comfortable heated lounge affording
spectacular views of the on-ice action and activities in the arenas. In
addition there are food outlets, an elevator, eight large dressing
rooms—four for each side--including a separate women’s dressing room,
a referee’s room and a first aid room.
The facility is designed to fully accommodate persons with
disabilities--all areas including the changing rooms and washrooms are
wheelchair accessible. Excellent vehicle parking, plus nearby RV parking,
complement the functionality of this fabulous facility. And to round out
the package, naturally, the Multiplex is home to a great Zamboni!
