Here are just a few of the annual events sure to entice you and yours to the Alberni Valley and welcome you back year after year. Perhaps the most "special" sporting event imaginable is the upcoming 2010 Olympic Games hosted by nearby Vancouver BC. Unique in BC, Port Alberni's state-of-the-art centralized training facilities will provide the perfect venues for conventional and cross training opportunities for Olympic athletes. Our friendly Vancouver Island location will no doubt also supply athletes with the fresh air and community encouragement they need to excel in their events. S'Port Alberni hopes to contribute to the success of the 2010 Olympians and share in their winning pride. Of course, volunteers and volunteering are the cornerstones of many special events. For example, the 2004 BC Winter games were supported by over 3,000 volunteers. Not a bad ratio when you take into account the athlete participation was 2.400. And it's been that way in Port Alberni right from the beginning. "You know, there were lots of volunteers that were coming forth will all kinds of skills and a willingness just to help out and make the event special" says the Manager of Recreation Services, Ron Doetzel. "Visitors said the locals were so welcoming and you would see evidence that people were involved in the games wherever you went in the community and that was really special" notes Ron.
